Experience the heart of Mongolia on a 5-day Mongol Desert and nomadic homestay adventure across the desert-steppe landscapes of Rashaant, Swan Lake, the Mongol Desert Sand Dunes, and Bugdiin Ovoo. This authentic Mongolia homestay journey allows travelers to stay with local herding families, experience daily nomadic life, ride horses and camels, hike through open grasslands, learn traditional skills, and explore one of Mongolia’s beautiful desert-steppe regions where sand dunes, lakes, livestock, and nomadic culture come together.
This trip is available in two travel styles. The Rustic Option follows a more traditional, old-school Mongolia travel approach using public buses from Ulaanbaatar and local rural vehicle transfers to reach the nomadic family area. The Comfort Option provides a smoother and more comfortable experience with a private vehicle from your hotel in Ulaanbaatar to the nomadic families, vehicle standby-support during the trip, and private return transport back to Ulaanbaatar at the end of the journey.

Day 1: Journey to the Nomadic Homeland
Depart Ulaanbaatar by public bus at 11am and travel through Mongolia’s vast grasslands and open steppe to Rashaant village. Upon arrival, a local driver will transfer you to the welcoming home of Mr. Dashpuntsag’s family. After a traditional lunch and milk tea, spend the afternoon settling into nomadic life you can help prepare traditional dairy products such as aaruul (dried curds), fresh cream, yogurt, or homemade dumplings. As the sun sets over the steppe, enjoy a home-cooked dinner and stories around the stove before overnighting in the family’s traditional guest ger.
Day 2: Swan Lake and Mongol Desert Sand Dunes
After breakfast, hike through rolling grasslands to the beautiful Swan Lake, nestled beside the Mongol Desert Sand Dunes for 6kms. This unique landscape where water, grassland, and sand dunes meet offers excellent opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and quiet reflection. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the lake and climb the nearby sand dunes for panoramic views across the steppe. Return to the family in the late afternoon. Before dinner, join the family in collecting livestock and preparing evening chores. Overnight in the guest ger.
Day 3: Horseback Journey Across the Steppe
Following breakfast, begin your horseback or hiking journey across the open grasslands to the next nomadic family. Upon arrival at Mr. Otgonbayar’s family, enjoy lunch and traditional hospitality. Then you will continue by horse or camel to Bugdiin Ovoo, one of the area’s most respected sacred sites for 12kms. Learn about Mongolia’s ancient shamanic traditions and participate in the customary practice of walking around the ovoo three times while making wishes for good fortune and safe travels. Return to the family camp for dinner and an evening of cultural exchange. Overnight in the guest ger.
Day 4: Live Like a Nomad
Today is dedicated entirely to experiencing authentic nomadic life. Depending on the season and daily needs, you may participate in herding sheep, goats, horses, or milking livestock; watering camels, gathering dung for fuel; preparing dairy products; or helping with other daily household activities. In the afternoon, enjoy traditional games such as ankle bone games, learn about nomadic customs and folklore, and share stories with your host family. This is often the most memorable day of the journey. Overnight with the family.
Day 5: Farewell to the Steppe
Rise early to participate in morning chores and livestock milking before breakfast. After saying farewell to your host family, transfer to Rashaant village and board the public bus back to Ulaanbaatar at midafternoon, arriving in the late afternoon with unforgettable memories of Mongolia’s nomadic culture and hospitality.
