Day 1: Ride to Bayangiin Garam (15 km)
You will depart Ulaanbaatar by local bus to the picturesque Terelj National Park, well known for its scenic mountainous landscapes, stunning river valleys and lush green forests that are habitat to local wildlife and an array of wild flowers too. Upon arrival at the Terelj Village bus stop, our nomadic guide will greet you. Together you will begin your adventure as you saddle up and ride toward Bayangiin Garam, a scenic riverside area. This first day allows you to get comfortable with your horse as you travel through rolling hills and lush meadows, soaking in the vast open landscapes.
Day 2: Cross Khabirgyn Davaa Pass (17 km)
Today, you will ascend Khabirgyn Davaa, a picturesque mountain pass offering stunning panoramic views. Experience Mongolia’s rugged beauty as you traverse winding trails and immerse yourself in the wilderness.
Day 3: Ride to Khonogt Tolgoi & Khar Nuur (18 km total)
A shorter ride takes you to Khonogt Tolgoi, a gently sloping hill surrounded by tranquil landscapes. After a brief rest, continue riding toward Khar Nuur (Black Lake), a breathtaking hidden gem nestled among the mountains. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters, this crystal-clear alpine lake spans around 2.5 square kilometers and reaches depths of 25-30 meters. It was formed when glacial moraines from the Khentii Mountains, ranging from 20 to 80 meters in height, blocked a valley, allowing water to accumulate in the basin. The lake’s deep blue waters beautifully contrast with the surrounding coniferous forests, rugged cliffs, and vast grasslands, creating a peaceful and secluded retreat. The Khöliin River, which originates from Khar Nuur, carves a striking 20-meter-deep canyon through the moraine before merging with the Khongor River. Small streams such as Ar Khöliin and Khiidiin rivers, originating from the Khiidiin Sariidag range, feed into the lake. Enjoy the pristine wilderness, take in the breathtaking scenery, and spend a peaceful night by the lake.
Day 4: Visit Khiidiin Sariidag (22 km)
A long but rewarding ride takes you to Khiidiin Sariidag, a sacred mountain with deep historical and spiritual significance. At the head of the Khagiin River, nestled in the granite cliffs of Khiidiin Sariidag, lie the ruins of an ancient monastery. Built in the 17th century under the orders of Zanabazar, the First Bogd of Mongolia, this stone monastery once served as a significant religious center. The Great Monastery (Ikh Khüree) was based here between 1654 and 1687 before its relocation. By 1680, the site had been expanded to serve as a major hub of Buddhism. However, during the 1687 conflict between the Khalkha Mongols and the Oirats, the forces of Galdan Boshigt Khan destroyed the monastery. The ruins were first studied in 1915-1916 by a Russian research team led by P.A. Vitte, who discovered fragments of clay Buddha statues, decorative roof tiles, and other architectural relics. Not only was this one of the largest monasteries associated with Zanabazar, but its unique mountain setting adds to its historical and cultural significance.
Day 5: Reach Kherkhluur (19 km)
Today, you will arrive at Kherkhluur, a remote and pristine valley known for its untouched natural beauty. Surrounded by rolling hills, rugged cliffs, and meandering rivers, this secluded area offers a true escape into Mongolia’s wilderness. The landscape is home to diverse wildlife, including deer and various bird species. As you ride through this breathtaking terrain, take in the tranquility of the unspoiled environment, far from civilization.
Day 6: Cross Yundeg Pass (18 km)
Venture over Yundeg Davaa, another stunning mountain pass with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys. Enjoy the exhilarating ride through rugged terrain, taking in Mongolia’s untouched beauty.
Day 7: Explore Galtai Bulnai Healing Spring (12 km)
Travel to Galtai Bulnai, home to a famous natural spring known for its healing properties. Rest and rejuvenate in this peaceful location, a favorite spot among locals for its therapeutic mineral waters.
Day 8: Ride to Bosgiin Bridge & Stay with a Nomadic Family (15 km)
Continue your journey toward Bosgiin Bridge, an important river crossing surrounded by breathtaking steppe landscapes. Enjoy the gentle ride along winding rivers and rolling hills.
Day 9: Return to the Wrangler’s Home (25 km)
Your final full day on horseback takes you back to the wrangler’s home, where you can celebrate the completion of your incredible journey. Enjoy a well-earned traditional Mongolian feast and share stories with fellow riders and the locals. This evening, you will stay overnight with the nomadic family, offering one last opportunity to experience the warmth of Mongolian hospitality.
Day 10: Experience Nomadic Life & Return to Ulaanbaatar
Start the day by participating in traditional nomadic activities—you can milk animals, help prepare Mongolian dairy products, or simply enjoy the peaceful morning by taking time to relax or explore the surroundings at your own pace. After a farewell lunch with the family, your wrangler will guide you to the bus stop, where you will take a local bus back to Ulaanbaatar (UB), marking the end of your extraordinary Mongolian horseback expedition.
