Day 4: Trek to Khar Nuur (18 km)
One of the most anticipated days of your journey, today you will reach Khar Nuur, a breathtakingly beautiful freshwater lake nestled in a remote valley. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters, this crystal-clear alpine lake spans around 2.5 square kilometers and reaches depths of 25-30 meters. It was formed when glacial moraines from the Khentii Mountains, ranging from 20 to 80 meters in height, blocked a valley, allowing water to accumulate in the basin. The lake’s deep blue waters beautifully contrast with the surrounding coniferous forests, rugged cliffs, and vast grasslands, creating a peaceful and secluded retreat. The Khöliin River, which originates from Khar Nuur, carves a striking 20-meter-deep canyon through the moraine before merging with the Khongor River. Small streams such as Ar Khöliin and Khiidiin rivers, originating from the Khiidiin Sariidag range, feed into the lake. Enjoy peaceful walks along the lake’s shoreline, go for a refreshing swim, or simply relax and take in the serenity of this untouched paradise. This is a perfect opportunity to connect with nature and unwind in Mongolia’s tranquil wilderness.
Day 5: Hike to Khonogt Tolgoi (11 km)
Leaving Khar Nuur behind, you will trek towards Khonogt Tolgoi, a scenic hill offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The trail takes you through rolling grasslands where you may encounter herders grazing their livestock. Camp at the foot of the hill and enjoy the solitude of the Mongolian wilderness.
