MONGOLIA GOBI DESERT TOUR TO EXPLORE THE DESERT MARVELS – ITINERARY

So what was it like for Mongolia’s first American Explorer? This Jeep tour takes you around the sites where famed explorers have visited and carried out their famous archeological works across some of the most stunning locations with Southern Gobi Desert region. If you love those old-school explorations to remote locations with plenty of overland time, dust, sand, grit, etc.,  then you’ll love experience Mongolia’s geographic terrains as well as the renown Red Flaming Cliffs of the Gobi Desert! Historically you’ll be the same region where the first ancient dinosaur fossils and dinosaur eggs were discovered. This desert Jeep tour will take you across Mongolia’s Southern Gobi Desert Region where you will have an unforgettable adventure!

Day One – Jeep tour across the Gobi Desert to Mongolia’s Tsagaan Suvraga, then onwards to Ulaan Suvraga to explore these amazing geographical terrains (L, D – Mongolia Gobi Desert Jeep Tours – Overnight at a Mongolian Ger Camp): You will depart Ulaanbaatar city at 0800 to start your southern Jeep tour to Mandagovi (provincial center of the Middle Gobi), as you travel you will witness the transforming power of the Gobi Desert. Upon arrival in Mandalgovi, we’ll have lunch and then continue onwards to Tsagaan Suvraga ger camp. I would definitely prepare your camera to take a lot of wonderful sunset shots – Tsagaan suvraga cliffs rarely disappoint with their sheer slopes facing east are just amazing! From a distance, it seems to be the ruins of the ancient city as the cliff walls reach a height of 30 meters and spanning 100 meters in length.

Day Two – Overland by jeep to the Gobi Desert’s Yoliin Am Cliffs to explore the wonders of this National Park (L, D – Mongolia Gobi Desert Jeep Tours – Overnight at a Mongolian Ger Camp): In the morning we will drive to the “Khanbogd“ tourist camp in South Gobi. After lunch, you will start the excursion to Yol Valley (Vulture Canyon) National Park. The area is an oasis, attracting wildlife with its water, good grazing, and sheltered canyons. The wonder of this beautiful valley is the river of ice (locally known as the Gobi Glacier), it stretches across the canyon floor and amazingly survives the desert heat well into the month of August every year. A hike down the valley offers a great opportunity to observe the local wildlife and enjoy the cool waters of the stream that emerges from underneath the ice. In the evening back to camp and have a dinner and overnight in the gers.

Day Three – Overland by Jeep to the astonishing Hongor Els Sand Dunes to explore this desert jewel of Mongolia (B, L, D –Mongolia Gobi Desert Jeep Tours – Overnight at a Mongolian Ger Camp): In the morning you will begin the overland drive to the internationally famous Hongor Sand Dunes that stretches an extraordinary length of 180 kilometers by 15-20 kilometers wide. The huge sand dunes are apart of the desert zone, which makes-up 2.7% of the Mongolia’s territory. Upon arrival at the desert camp, you will have a late lunch before beginning our exploration of the towering dunes on foot. The rugged desert plants of the Gobi at the edges of the sands are beautiful in their own sculptural way, and if the breeze is blowing just right, we may hear the dunes sing to us.

Day Four – Overland to the famed Red Cliffs of Mongolia, made famous by the early American explore and archeologist Roy Chapman Andrews (B, L, D – Mongolia Gobi Desert Jeep Tours – Overnight at a Mongolian Ger Camp): After breakfast we will journey to Bayanzag that is internationally famous for the discovery of dinosaur fossils, dinosaur eggs and hatchlings, of the Cretaceous Period. Bayanzag is also famed for its’ red sandstone cliffs which take on a beautiful red and orange hues during sunset, with a nice mix of its Sculptural Saxaul trees that grow in the arid rocky soil.

In 1921, the American Explorer, Roy Chapman Andrews had made the internationally famous Paleontological discoveries of the last century in Bayanzag. Since then, hundreds of archeological expeditions have come to this remote desert location in search of dinosaur eggs with a diameter between 10 to 15 centimeters; eggs found in Mongolia were the first ever discovered in their record size. Upon arrival in Bayanzag, we will visit a desert camp nearby where we will have lunch before starting the excursion that will last until the evening dinner at tourist camp.

Day Five – Overland by jeep to the Gobi Desert’s largest monastery ruins to explore this amazing location (B, L, D – Mongolia Gobi Desert Jeep Tours – Overnight at a Mongolian Ger Camp): After breakfast we will begin our overland drive to Ongi Monastery where we will have our lunch near the monastery at a local desert ger camp. After your meal, you’ll start the afternoon excursion into the ancient ruins of Ongi Monastery where you will be transported back in time some 300 years ago – while you walk around it feels like a scene from Indiana Jones. The Ongi Monastery was the largest monastery throughout the Gobi Desert Region that didn’t survive the 1930s oppression that completely destroyed the monastery as well as around 300 monks were killed by revolutionists.

Day Six – Departure (B, L): After breakfast, you will begin the journey back to Mandalgovi to have lunch, and then onwards to Ulaanbaatar.
